Karpacz for winter break — a plan for any weather (2026 guide)

Brick Museum Karpacz — an attraction during the winter break in the mountains

Karpacz for winter break — what to know before the trip?

For decades, Karpacz has been one of Poles' favourite places for winter break. A town at the foot of Mount Śnieżka, the chairlift to Kopa, several slopes, plenty of mountain shelters and beautiful snow-covered Karkonosze (Giant Mountains) trails — all in one place. Every January and February, thousands of families with kids come here from all over Poland.

As the owners of the Brick Museum in Karpacz, running it here with Magda since 6 January 2015, we've seen 11 winter-break seasons firsthand. Every day we meet families from across the country — and we know what a winter break in the mountains really looks like. This guide is our real knowledge about Karpacz in winter — what works, what to expect and how to put together a plan that saves even those days when the weather gives rain instead of snow.

Skiing and winter attractions in Karpacz

Ski slopes in Karpacz

Karpacz has several ski slopes of varying scale — from popular family runs with T-bar lifts to the large complex of Karpacz Ski Arena (formerly known as Kopa) with a chairlift and longer trails. For children learning to ski there are ski schools with instructors from 3–4 years of age. More advanced skiers will also find trails in nearby Szklarska Poręba and Świeradów-Zdrój.

Always check current pass prices, lift opening times and trail conditions on individual stations' websites before your trip — during the break turnover is high, and snow conditions in the lower parts of Karpacz can be unpredictable.

Sledges and sledging hills — the alternative to skiing

If your child is too young for skis or doesn't want to spend the day on the slope, in Karpacz you have several places where sledges alone will give you a great day:

  • "Kolorowa" Summer and Winter Toboggan Run — alpine sledges on a special track, running all year. A Karpacz classic, available for kids from about 3–4 years (riding with an adult).
  • Saneczkowa Góra — a winter playground and snowtubing run at ul. Myśliwska 13.
  • Karpatka — Sledging Hill at ul. Myśliwska 3.
  • Municipal sledging hill at ul. Parkowa.
  • "Nasza Górka" — slides, sledges, snow tubes at ul. Poznańska 7.

Chairlift to Kopa in winter

Karpacz Ski Arena — chairlift to Kopa (1377 m above sea level) opens up a completely different world in winter. The snow-covered Karkonosze from above is a view that stays with you for a long time. At the top you can use the ski trails or simply admire the panorama and drop into a mountain shelter for tea. Parking at the lower station of the Kopa lift: 5 PLN per started hour or 30 PLN for the whole day (as of 2026, verify current rates). Lift tickets are bought at the lower station box office.

Remember: at Kopa it's always a few degrees cooler than in the valley and the wind is significantly stronger. A warmer layer, a balaclava, gloves — mandatory, even if it's "pleasant" down in Karpacz itself.

Indoor attractions for a bad break day — when the weather lets you down

Winter breaks in the mountains have their own rules. For a few days the snow can fall beautifully, then for the next few — rain, raging wind or trails so blown over no one will leave the hotel. A good break plan always has Plan B for every day.

Brick Museum + Video Game Museum — two museums under one roof

Administrative address: ul. Mickiewicza 11. Museum entrance: from ul. Konstytucji 3 Maja in Karpacz. Open daily 10:00–18:00, all year round — with one exception, 1 November.

The Brick Museum is three floors of interactive brick models. Most have buttons and joysticks underneath — your child (and you) can set in motion trains, discos, dancing figures, and our flagship SpaceX rocket launches and flies into space. Among the flagship models: a brick railway station, the world of Harry Potter + a large Hogwarts Express, Star Wars, the pirate ship in a new version, an amusement park, a chairlift with a mountain village (a nod to the Karkonosze), Technic construction machines, Frozen, a zone of the 80s and 90s, Mars with a rover suspended from the ceiling.

The Video Game Museum is on the top floor of the same building — 30 stations with retro games where you actually play. Tetris, Super Mario, Tekken and dozens of classics. Among the exhibits, real treasures: the first Magnavox brought from the USA (the oldest home console in history) and UNITRA GTV — the first Polish Pong-style console.

Pricing 2026 — the family ticket gets cheaper the more of you there are:

  • Brick Museum: 35 PLN / 1 person — 145 PLN / 5 people
  • Video Game Museum: 29 PLN / 1 person — 120 PLN / 5 people
  • Combined "Two Museums" ticket: 52 PLN / 1 person — 200 PLN for 5 people, only 40 PLN per person
  • Children under 90 cm tall — free admission.

Karkonoskie Tajemnice — a multimedia exhibit about the Spirit of the Mountains

Right next door to us (ul. Mickiewicza 1a) is Karkonoskie Tajemnice (Karkonosze Mysteries) — a multimedia exhibit that tells the legends of the Karkonosze. Pricing: 36 PLN regular, 29 PLN reduced (as of 2026, check current rates).

Toy Museum in Szklarska Poręba

Less than 30 minutes by car from Karpacz lies our second museum — Toy Museum in Szklarska Poręba (ul. Jedności Narodowej 16). Toys from various eras: Hot Wheels, Barbie, Monster High, Sylvanian Families, bricks, a plush collection, Pop Mart, Labubu, Pokémon. Website: muzeumzabawek.com.

Pools and wellness — when the kids want to swim

  • Hotel Gołębiewski Karpacz — a large water-park-style pool zone, several slides. In our view, the strongest swimming option in Karpacz for a family.
  • Hotel Sandra Spa Karpacz — a smaller recreational pool.
  • Cieplice Thermal Baths in Jelenia Góra (~25 minutes by car) — thermal pools. Practical note: the venue is relatively small for the number of tourists visiting the region — during winter break it can get heavily crowded.

Karpacz with a stroller in winter? Take a baby carrier instead

A small thing nobody writes about: Karpacz is hard for a stroller all year round, and especially hard in winter. Steep climbs, kerbs, steps, plus snow and ice — the stroller becomes a physical challenge. The hidden solution: a baby carrier, a sling, a hiking child carrier. Heavier than a stroller on flat ground, but far more efficient in a steep town and on fresh snow. Plus: the child is close to the parent's warmth — crucial in winter.

Promenade renovation — important seasonal note 2026

In 2026 the promenade in central Karpacz is completely dug up. You can pass through, shops and restaurants are running normally, but it's hard to walk and the sight of construction work spoils the winter atmosphere of the town. If you care about atmospheric evening walks with hot chocolate — this year shift them toward Karpacz Górny (Wang Temple area).

FAQ — frequently asked questions about winter break in Karpacz

When is the best time to go to Karpacz for winter break?

The optimal moment is the middle of your region's winter break — most snow, fully open lifts, the most themed events in town. If you want to avoid the biggest crowds, consider the first or last days of your slot.

Is there always snow in Karpacz during winter break?

Unfortunately not. The lower parts of Karpacz can be without snow during the break. Higher parts (Kopa, the slopes) usually have artificial snow. A bad-weather plan (indoor attractions) is the foundation of a good stay.

From what age can a child learn to ski in Karpacz?

Most ski schools accept children from 3–4 years old. Book your course in advance before the break.

Does the Brick Museum get full during the break?

Is the Brick Museum open every day during the winter break?

Yes, daily 10:00–18:00. The only scheduled closed day in the year is 1 November — during the winter-break period (January–February) we're open every day.

Summary — from the owners of the Brick Museum

Karpacz for winter break is a classic that defends itself. Magda and I have run a museum here for 11 years and every year we see the same scenarios — first days of euphoria with snowy beauty, middle days with sleet ("now what?"), and last days with families who dropped in three times that week and discover new model details on every visit.

The key to a good break in Karpacz: a sun plan + a rain plan. Slopes, sledges and the chairlift are obvious — but keep our museums, Karkonosze Mysteries, hotel pools and the Toy Museum in reserve. Then no weather will spoil your week.
